New Street tunnel repair

New Street repairs began in June 2026, replacing part of the tunnel ceiling while shifting road traffic and using part of the RMA parking lot for staging.

Local record and application

What this record means for a receiving site

Staunton's project notice separates New Street from the deeper Byers and West Johnson tunnel rebuilds. It describes replacement of the downstream bridge-deck or tunnel-ceiling segment, rather than a full wall replacement, with the western RMA parking area reserved for construction staging. New Street was to remain open while traffic shifted to one side; the notice said as many as 31 parking spaces could be unavailable. A food-service receiver must therefore identify a lawful pad apart from public staging and confirm that the shifted lane can accommodate a delivery truck. A Staunton dishwashing trailer rental would make sense only if a real kitchen needed temporary warewashing capacity; a road repair does not itself establish that need. The kitchen manager should map dirty-dish returns and clean-dish departures, count peak racks per hour, and verify hot water, drainage, and sanitation approval. The planned fall 2026 finish was a forecast in the city notice, so current lane and parking conditions require a fresh check.
